55 large format black and white photographs and 13 snapshots of Lake Willoughby, Vermont and its surroundings, and Franconia Notch and Mount Washington, New Hampshire, taken by Wendell A. Mowry between 1900 and 1955. The Lake Willoughby photographs were taken between 1908 and 1955, and are mostly of the lake and the landscape surrounding it. Other subjects include a fish and game meet on August 14, 1909, the steamer "Keewaydan," and three photographs of Gilman's Tavern, which burned down in 1941. There are also three snapshots, taken in the 1950s, of "The Calvin", a cottage on Lake Willoughby. Several of Mowry's photographs were reproduced in Vermont Life , v. 7, no. 4 (Summer 1953) and that issue is also included in the collection. A loose snapshot of North Beach, dated August, 1957, has been removed to the VHS Photograph Collection and is filed under F-La-Willoughby. The New Hampshire photographs were taken between 1900 and 1903 and include images of Franconia Notch, Mount Washington, and Bethlehem.The photographs of Franconia Notch include images of Eagle Cliff, Echo Lake, the Flume Gorge, the Basin, and the Old Man of the Mountain. The Mount Washington photographs include images of the Mount Washington Cog Railway, "Lake of the Clouds," and Tip-Top House. There are also two photographs of Bethlehem, New Hampshire, including a townscape taken from Mount Agassiz.

Wendell Axtell Mowry was born on November 28, 1871 in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, the son of Alonzo and Lucretia (Axtell) Mowry. He married Mabel A. Thayer (1867-1967) on August 25, 1895. They had two daughters, Helen Axtell (1896-1994) and Dorothy Thayer (1901-2000). Wendell A. Mowry was a teacher and later superintendent in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, but the family spent summers in New Hampshire (1900 to 1903) and in Westmore, Vermont in cottages along Lake Willoughby (1908 to 1957). ...
